The Steans Center established the Community Partners Internship program (CPI) to provide DePaul students the opportunity to gain work experience that combines professional development and community involvement. The CPI internship program also works to deepen the Steans Center's relationship with community partners by providing another level of assistance to Community based-Organizations serving communities throughout Chicago-metropolitan area.

Program Coordinator

Sunlight African Community Center
Description

Coordinates development and implementation of the Sunlight African Community Center’s After-School Program Activities. Administers assigned budget, assists in planning and implementing the after-school program and provides oral and written reports to the public and the school system, with approval of the Executive Director. Also facilitates partnerships with appropriate public and private agencies that provide services to the students and families, and the greater Chicago. Work with Executive Director to develop procedures and for operation of the after-school program. Prepares additional proposals for supplemental funding and through developing events. Perform other duties as assigned.


Outreach Worker

Description

The primary function of the Outreach Worker is to build relationships with the Paseo Boricua Businesses and DSBDA members. Intern would assist with dissemination of DSBDA materials for events, specific program, and general project to all our different constituencies (businesses, residents, property owners). Conduct interviews or surveys as needed, and facilitate and promote community participation in our events. Description

Intern would care for a small group of infants & toddlers and engage them in early learning activities. Volunteer Tutor – Spanish Literacy (ESL Class)

Description

Under the supervision of the Literacy Coordinator the Volunteer Tutor is responsible for imparting English as a Second Language classes, implementing, and designing curriculum-based activities for ESL in the Spanish Literacy Program. The tutor attends training sessions and departmental meetings.

Requirements

•Prepares and presents material for Spanish literacy and basic education classes according to curriculum guidelines. •Comes punctually to class at the time indicated in the schedule provided by the coordinator. •Elaborates, administers and grades exams. •Hands in assignments and examinations for maintaining and updating performance portfolios for each participant. •Attends pre-service and in-service training provided by the agency at the designated times. •Carries out from time to time other activities directly related to the academic progress of the tutorees.

Description

The Crisis Center Program provides services to youth, families and individuals who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. The Solid Ground Supportive Housing Program is a residence for homeless male youth aged 16-21.

Requirements

Responsibilities: •Prepare for major events: a September press conference, Annual Fall Gala and a Holiday Toy Drive for families. •Assist with the development of a new fundraising campaign targeting the Humboldt Park and Logan Square business community. This position would be responsible for front-end research, business outreach, and efficient follow-up. •Help maintain a donor portfolio that includes government agencies, organizations, corporations, foundations and individuals through administrative support •Update press contacts and assist in production of press materials •Conduct outreach with other local non-profit organizations to form linkages •Organize clothing closet donations •Performs other duties as assigned (data entry, filing, phone calls, mailings, etc)


Special Events Intern

Description

The Special Events Intern, with direction from the Development Director, works to elevate the fundraising performance of REST’s two annual (The Sleepwalk and The Boat Cruise) special events. RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Conducts a marketing and public relations campaign aimed at raising the awareness and attendance of the events. This includes designing marketing and advertising material, researching various advertising options, and obtaining successful media placements.
2. Coordinates mail campaign.
3. Serves as Event Representative at meetings, festivals, etc.
4. Solicits raffle prizes.
5. Assists with logistical planning.
6. Provides support with miscellaneous tasks consistent with the needs of the events.
QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will be working towards a bachelor’s degree, have coursework in a related capacity, a commitment to helping homeless adults, computer proficiency (Microsoft Office), good communication skills and flexibility.


Project JAM! Assistant

Description

Hours: 2:45-5:15PM (minimum of 3 days a week required).

Duties and Responsibilities:
-Help plan and run after-school program for 8-12 year olds at Jordan School in North Rogers Park.
-Help direct recreational and educational activities such as outdoor sports, organized indoor games, tutoring, arts and crafts and field trips.
-Assist in the organization of social workshop programs helping participants in the areas of communication, anger management, and multi-cultural awareness, problem solving strategies, conflict resolution, and drug/alcohol awareness.
-Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Interest and/or experience in working with youth-at-risk and energy to work and play with children at the end of the school day. Reliability is essential in order to establish and maintain a good relationship with program participants.


Literacy Coordinator Assistant

Description

Intern would assist in the orientation and support of Volunteer students from DePaul University. Also, intern assists in the operation of the Literacy Learning Center, providing administrative support and participation in community education coordination. Responsibilities include: 1. Assists with student registration.

Workers Rights Advocate

Description

Intern would conduct workers rights workshops and other educational and outreach activities in congregations or community-based organizations, or in other places where workers congregate. Also, internship would involve helping workers when they have a problem in the workplace by either filing complaints through the Chicago Area Workers Rights Initiative (CAWRI) and/or organizing a Direct Action response to the situation, referring workers to our Legal Clinic or promoting and facilitating union organizing. The Workers Rights Advocate is responsible for:
1. Case Management: Assessing the level of activity of each workers case; i.e. Keeping in touch with governmental agency and/or the attorney handling case. Keeping notes and files on cases updated in turn keeping worker(s) updated on their cases.
2. Addressing any needs and concerns individual workers might have; i.e. referring to immigration attorneys or other direct service organizations.
3. Maintaining an open channel of communication with other advocates to share strategies and methodologies that are effective.
4. Conducting workers rights workshops, advocate trainings and other informational and educational activities intended to reach out to workers and advocates.
5. Updating Workers Rights Status Sheet with relevant information on cases currently folding out
6. Answering calls to workers and setting up appointments between workers and advocates.

Project Assistant

Description

TCEP is a community-based organization that works in the eastern part of Little Village (sometimes known as Marshall Square). Our organization is a unique blend of direct action organizing and popular education. We also provide leadership development and services to community members and parents from five public schools including Telpochcalli School. TCEP works for social justice by increasing the capacity and participation of Little Village residents in the formation of a more united, educated, safer, and socially prepared community. We will do this by developing and maintaining a resident-directed community cultural center and a new model of community building/organizing. TCEP operates adult programs five days a week (M-F) generally from 9am – 8pm. And we have quarterly retreats that are weekends with occasional Saturday workshops in between. TCEP is an organization of five staff and various service providers. We also house a youth organizing group called SITY Ollin. Job Description: We need an assistant to work with the staff on both the program and organizing. Duties will include but are not limited to:
Data entry/database planning
Mailings
Assist in coordinating events regular meetings, activities and site visits
Plan and participate in quarterly retreats/convivios
Participate in staff meetings
A minimum of 15 hours is required but the arrangement of those hours can be flexible and open to negotiation (can include days and evenings)

Adult Education Program

Centro Romero
Description

This internship would include responsibilities in tutoring Low Intermediate adult ESL learners and administrative work. The primary responsibility is to facilitate the “Intercambio” class on Friday nights from 6pm-9pm. Intercambio is a class composed of half native Spanish speakers (Centro Romero students) and half native English speakers (DePaul students). The facilitator must be completely bilingual English/Spanish and comfortable leading a class in discussion and preparing exercises.

Description

Recruits, develops training opportunities, and works with businesses and institutions, such as the three major hospitals within our target area (either delegate to HPEP of large), provides action -- oriented leadership for all functions pf the NNNN / Humboldt Park Empowerment Partnership. Coordinates DPD delegate agency work plan including creating necessary reports. Spanish preferred. Responsible to NNNN's Executive Director / Associate Director and works closely to NNNN's HPEP organizers. Emphasis on working with a team of housing technicians, organizers, and other administrative support staff. Umoja Student Development Corporation
Description

The position supports Umoja programming efforts at Manley High School and other Umoja sites. This position assists in the administrative support, coordination and staffing, as appropriate, of academic and leadership programming for students and their families. Additionally, this position works to support college and career activities for Umoja student participants. The position is supervised by the Leadership Coordinator and will work closely with other Umoja program staff.
