The Community Service Studies Minor combines courses from several disciplines that provide a framework for viewing community service from the perspectives of theory, ethics and group dynamics. The curriculum relies heavily upon community-based Service Learning courses. This form of experiential learning is designed for students interested in developing a deeper understanding and practice of community service either as a prelude to a career after graduation or to enhance their personal sense of social justice as they enter the world of work. In this way, students are provided with the opportunity to integrate progressively deeper and more challenging forms of service and social engagement with more challenging intellectual reflection.
All undergraduate students are eligible to complete a minor in Community Service Studies. Course selection beyond the three mandatory courses must be done in consultation with the Director of the Community Service Studies program.
The minor requires the completion of six courses (24 credit hours): three of which are mandatory, and four of which must be community-based Service Learning (CbSL) courses that fulfill the Junior-Year Experiential Learning (JYEL) Liberal Studies requirement. (note: EL-CbSL courses are those which incorporate a minimum of 25 hours of community service into the course requirements.) Course numbers and titles in italics below are Community-based Service Learning courses.
Students may choose any three of the approved electives provided one has EL-CbSL designation.
Current Minor Requirements
The Steans Center and the Study Abroad program offers students the opportunity to complete two of the foundation courses in the Community Service Studies minor and the possibility of acquiring an elective within the minor. "With the potential to finish half of the six course minor, this program is designed to be the service learner's Study Abroad choice." One of three study abroad trips listed below may be used to fulfill one or more course requirements for the Minor. Approval of these trips for the Minor must be obtained in consultation with the Director before departure.
